Six Realms

The realm of humans (Manusya) The realm of humans is considered to be the most desirable realm for achieving enlightenment, as it offers the most opportunities for spiritual growth. Humans are believed to have the ability to make moral choices and to work towards enlightenment through meditation and other practices. However, humans also experience suffering and hardship, which can make it difficult to achieve enlightenment.

The realm of animals (Tiryagyoni) The realm of animals is inhabited by beings who have a very limited understanding of the world around them. These beings are driven primarily by instinct and are unable to engage in spiritual practices or work towards enlightenment. They may experience suffering and hardship, but they are not capable of understanding the causes of their suffering.

The realm of hungry ghosts (Preta) The realm of hungry ghosts is inhabited by beings who are consumed by desire and craving. These beings are depicted as having insatiable appetites but are unable to satisfy them. They are often depicted as having large bellies and tiny mouths, which symbolizes their inability to consume enough food. Because they are so consumed by their desires, they are unable to work towards enlightenment.

The realm of hell (Naraka) The realm of hell is characterized by intense suffering and punishment. Beings in this realm are believed to have accumulated a great deal of negative karma in their previous lives and are now experiencing the consequences of their actions. The punishments in this realm are often described as being both physical and psychological, and beings in this realm are unable to work towards enlightenment because of their overwhelming suffering.
